1111 ELM Creative Science & Art Workshops
The 1111 ELM Creative Science & Art sessions are a great choice for Scout badges, school enrichment, field trips, homeschool groups, church and youth groups, and other special outings. No previous experience is necessary—just come ready to learn, experiment and create! Pricing is $20 per participant.
1111 ELM 90-minute Creative Science & Art Workshops combine hands-on creativity with real-world science for an experience that’s educational, engaging and FUN. Kids will explore the science behind what they’re creating, experiment with ingredients, colors, textures and fragrances, and then put what they’ve learned into action by creating awesome products to take home.
Workshops are approximately 90 minutes and include guided instruction, hands-on learning and take-home creations. We can accommodate groups of up to 24 participants. Minimum number of participants to receive the special group rate is 10 participants. Please reach out if you have less than 10 in your group to discuss pricing.
WORKSHOP OPTIONS:
Slime + Soap | Ages 5+ Get ready for some seriously fun science! Kids will learn what makes soap , how glycerin soap differs from traditional cold-process soap, and a little about the history and science of soap making. Then we’ll dive into slime science! We’ll explore how glue and borax interact to transform a sticky liquid into stretchy slime, what an activator does, why glycerin can soften slime, and why slime dries out when left uncovered. Kids will create and customize their own soap and slime to take home.
Soap + Candles | Ages 10+ Explore two everyday products that are filled with fascinating science. Kids will learn about soapmaking, glycerin and how soap works before creating their own custom soaps. For our candle lesson, we’ll explore different types of waxes, how wax and wicks work together, fragrance in candles, and the science behind a burning candle. We’ll also cover important candle safety before everyone creates their own candle to take home.
Slime + Candles | Ages 10+ This workshop combines chemistry, creativity and a little bit of goo! Kids will learn the science behind slime—including how activators work, why slime stretches, and how different ingredients affect its texture. We’ll also explore the science of candles, including different types of wax, wicks, fragrance, melting and burning, along with proper candle safety. Everyone will customize their own slime and candle to take home.
Perfume/Cologne + Soap | Ages 12+ Discover the art and science of fragrance! Participants will learn how fragrances are created and discover how individual scents can be blended to create something completely unique. We’ll also experiment with how fragrance can be used in different products. Participants will create their own custom perfume or cologne blend and then learn how to incorporate fragrance into a handmade soap creation.
Workshop Details & Policies All sessions are held at 1111 ELM Soap & Candle Studio, 17 N. Cass Avenue in Westmont, Illinois.
Participants are encouraged to bring a water bottle to the session.
Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a waiver before participating. Waivers will be emailed to the group host in advance for easy distribution and signing.
A $50 deposit is required to reserve your group’s date and time. Deposits are non-refundable; however, if you need to cancel, the deposit may be applied toward a future program. Cancellations or rescheduling requests must be made at least 7 days prior to your scheduled workshop.
